Segera – at the heart of Laikipia Plateau – is a wildlife sanctuary where your inspirational journey provides a positive impact on the land and its people.

Nestled between Mount Kenya to the east and the Great Rift Valley to the west, Segera Retreat makes its home on 20,000 hectares (50,000 acres) of preserved land where our sustainable lifestyle is focused around conservation, community, culture, and commerce (4Cs).

Segera is a Long Run Destination. Long Run Destinations are carefully selected by the Zeitz Foundation for their commitment to enacting the 4Cs.

Main Purpose: The 4C department within Segera helps mainstream environmental management across departmental operations through implementation of the 4Cs (Conservation, Community, Culture and Commerce.)

Current areas of focus include reducing carbon emission, waste management, reduce energy use, monitoring water consumption, promoting sustainable supply chains, increasing awareness around environmental and wildlife conservation to staff, guests and surrounding community.

4C is a small team that performs strategic advisory role and monitoring to different environmental projects and departments within the Conservancy.

Success depends on building sound working relationships, being proactive, respectful and having a practical, problem-solving attitude.

Program Objective: The objective of the program is to provide the successful candidate with an opportunity to develop his/her skills, knowledge and experience needed to progress to higher level role in any organization.

Basic Requirements

  • Application letter
  • Must have completed and graduated with either Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Natural resources management, Environmental sciences, Sustainable tourism, Project management or related field from a recognized institution.
  • Recommendation letter from the Institution
  • Copies of academic transcripts
  • Copy of National Identification card
  • Medical Insurance cover
  • Copy of National Social Security Fund (NSSF)
  • Copy of PIN certificate
  • Copy of National Hospital Insurance Fund ( NHIF)
  • Must be fluent in English and Kiswahili (both oral and written.)

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the 4C officer, the candidate is expected to perform the following:

  • Support administration and implementation of all aspects of the Long Run and Segera’s E4C
  • Working towards the goal that Segera is working to become net positive
  • Attend 4C related functions and create a report on lessons learnt and share with the team
  • Participate in all 4C calls and prepare a report on the calls within a week of the call taking place with key recommendations and next step arrangements
  • Prepare and conduct regular talks to guests and visitors on 4C’S plan and objectives
  • Explaining Segera’s initiatives and environmental progress to interested guests
  • Oversee the 4C Center to ensure that it is presentable, provide tours of the center
  • Contribute to provide content for the 4C center
  • Training with all the staff on the 4C’s and what it means both in their work and personal lives
  • Contribute to the compilation and update of environmental action plans for Segera 4Cs projects being implemented.
  • Support the 4C officer to monitor and report implementation progress of 4Cs action plans
  • Assist in developing reports and reviews in 4Cs projects for implementation, through background research, data collection presentation and drafting text.
  • Conduct research on appropriate, locally available and innovative sustainable energy, waste management and procurement solutions.

Training and learning elements

  • Professional experience working in a GER certified property under The Long Run Destinations and Zeitz Foundation.
  • Working in a diverse multicultural environment with local and international community.
  • Gain experience in drafting technical and non-technical documents for different audiences; preparing for, participating in, and documenting findings of meetings, workshops and training sessions for a range of audiences.

Eligibility and duration of Internship

  • The internship period will be six (6) months with the possibility of renewing the contract.
  • The intern should be an unemployed Kenyan citizen who has completed diploma/degree course and is looking for experience and exposure related to the area of study.
