Vacant Position: Bee Keeper
Location: Segera, Laikipia County
Reporting to: 4C Officer

Purpose of the Job: Taking good care of and ensuring proper management of our bees in order to produce high quality honey.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Build, inspect or repair hives traditional log hive and modern hives
- Introduce a new colony or maintain an existing one
- Hive inspection for diseases/parasites, hygiene and health
- Monitor the size of the bee’s colony and amount of honey produced
- Collect honey from hives
- Prepare and bottle honey
- Breed queen bees and smaller, starter or ‘nucleus’ bee colonies
- Hosting guests during honey harvesting activities
The ideal candidate must have the following minimum qualifications:-
- Certificate/diploma in agriculture/apiculture or related field
- At least 1 – 3 years of relevant work experience as a bee keeper
- Able to communicate and write in English and Kiswahili.
- Knowledge of indigenous trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants in Laikipia that are beneficial to bees
- Knowledge of the yearly cycle and habits of bees
- Good bee handling skills so they know when and how to approach bees
- Knowledge of plant types and life cycles, and how and when plants produce nectar
- Skill in identifying bee diseases, parasites and knowledge of methods of disease control
- Knowledge to extract and assess quality of bee products such as honey, wax, pollen, royal jelly and propolis
- Carpentry skillsfor building and repairing hive boxes.

- Leadership skills-To lead and train a team of existing bee keepers.
- Humble
- Good record keeping and attention to detail
- Valid driving license (vehicle and/or motorbike)with at least 3 years experience.
