Nyahururu Water and Sanitation Company Ltd, a public water utility company fully owned by the County Government of Laikipia and with a mandate to provide water and sanitation services in Laikipia County is seeking to recruit a self-driven individual for the position of Operations Engineer.

Reporting to the Technical Services Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible in assisting the Technical Services Manager in project management, operations and maintenance of water and sewerage networks as well as implementation of the department’s strategies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure professional and economical operations and maintenance of water production, storage, transmission and distribution systems in the company’s area of service to meet key performance indicators.
  • Oversee the operations and maintenance of sewerage network and treatment systems to ensure highest levels of performance and compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Ensure economic use of available resources and tools, deal with logistics of the operations and coordinate efforts of different units to achieve departmental objectives.
  • Ensure the availability and efficient utilization of resources under your charge.
  • Ensure that water and sewer connections are done in compliance with internal and external regulations and legislation in order to avoid conflicts ensure water reaching the consumers is of required standard and effluent discharged into the river from the treatment works meets required standard.
  • Assist the Technical Services Manager in the preparation of departmental annual budget and work plans.
  • Assist the Technical services manager in identifying potential areas for water and sewer services extensions.
  • Assist the Technical Services Manager in the design of projects and preparation of technical proposals for service extensions or rehabilitation of water and sewerage infrastructure.
  • Assisting with the reviews of water system capacity and service evaluations associated with water service extension projects and other potential service growth opportunities.
  • Supervise, train, manage performance and motivate staff in the department to ensure improvement of professional skills.
  • Ensure timely and economic repairs of leakages or breakdown in water supply and distribution systems, unblocking of sewer system and ensure manholes and trenches are covered.
  • Undertaking any other duties assigned to him/her in line with his/her qualifications and experience as need arises.

Qualification, Experience and Other Competencies

  • Degree in Civil Engineering, Water Engineering or any related engineering degree from a recognized institution of higher learning.
  • Be registered as Graduate Engineer by Engineers Board of Kenya and be of good standing
  • Member of Institute of Engineer of Kenya IEK and be of good standing
  • A minimum of 5 years working experience in the water sector, 3 of which MUST be at supervisory or managerial level.
  • Demonstrate fluency in use of design and drafting software -AutoCAD (civil 3D).
  • Experience in use of engineering hydraulic modeling software –e.g. EPANET.
  • Experience in use of ICT systems.
  • Ability to pay attention to details.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills.
  • Strong leadership and problem-solving skills.
  • Self driven individual who is diligent, honest, disciplined and responsible.
  • Demonstrate good leadership and strong management skills with ability to work under minimal supervision and under pressure.
  • Qualifications and (or) experience in GIS is an added advantage.

Must satisfy and the requirements of chapter six of the constitution of Kenya 2010 on Leadership and integrity through provision of; –

(a) Current certificate of good conduct from Directorate of Criminal Investigation Department

(b) Current Tax compliance certificate from Kenya Revenue Authority

(c) A clean and current report or clearance certificate from an approved credit reference Bureau (CRB)

(d) Clearance from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC)

(e) Clearance Certificate from Higher Education Loans Board (HELB)

The appointment will be on permanent and pensionable terms.
