Position Title: Plumber
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is an impartial, neutral, and independent organisation with the exclusively humanitarian mission to protect the lives and dignity of victims of war and internal violence and to provide them with assistance.
It also endeavours to prevent suffering by promoting and strengthening International Humanitarian Law and universal humanitarian principles.
The ICRC’s Regional Delegation in Nairobi coordinates the institution’s humanitarian activities in Kenya, Tanzania, and Djibouti.
OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY
The Plumber ensures proper maintenance of ICRC premises and equipment through carrying out all plumbing maintenance activities as per the standard operation procedure.
TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Examines and formulates solutions for the plumbing works in a cost/efficiency manner;
- Analyses and improves existing piping towards preventive maintenance;
- Assesses the need for repairs, required materials (quantity and quality) and makes timeframes for given the project;
- Assesses the plumbing installations in new premises;
- Installing of new pipe network and repairing plumbing systems and fixtures;
- Performs basic electrical works related to the hot water system and water pumps;
- Is proactive in assessing future problems when visiting premises and intervenes immediately when possible;
- Monitors and records the water consumption in the premises and reports irregularities;
- Plans and installs new plumbing system in the office or residences;
- Prepares simple designs and drawings, and able to assist in implementing complex designs;
- Proposes and implements the preventive maintenance schedule for the residence and the delegation facility;
- Carries out daily plumbing inspections during take over, handover of residence and in the delegation facility;
- Maintains and repairs all plumbing components which includes toilets, showers, urinals, drains, wash hand basin, boilers, kitchen sinks, water tanks, gas systems;
- Carries out all plumbing maintenance activities as per the standard operating procedure;
- Responds to emergencies quickly and able to work under pressure;
- Writes reports after any intervention;
- Performs tasks safely, identifies and minimizes hazards within their work radius;
- Follows up on all work-related messages and correspondence with the relevant contacts and departments.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS AND COMPETENCIES
- Minimum O level with relevant Diploma in Plumbing;
- Minimum 3-4 years’ experience in a similar position;
- Minimum Plumbing Grade III Certificate;
- Previous working experience with an International Organization (preferred);
- Excellent command of written and spoken English Advanced computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint);
- Attentive to details with a high sense of confidentiality and integrity;
- Strong troubleshooting skills;
- A high degree of flexibility and responsiveness;
- Good working Knowledge of water supply systems, waste treatment plants, water pumps, and boilers;
- Ability to read and interpret plumbing installation layouts.
