Background:
The CORE Group Partners Project (CGPP) is a multi-country, multi-partner initiative providing financial support, on-the-ground technical assistance and guidance to strengthen host country efforts to eradicate polio and strengthen immunization systems. The premise of this project is to work through existing networks of international and local NGOs with established child survival activities in hard-to-reach areas with poor immunization coverage. A country-level Secretariat coordinates the work of CORE group members in a manner that complements the work of other implementing partners. The work of all CORE Group members is in support of the national action plan for polio eradication, COVID-19 prevention and vaccination, Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA) consistent with national goals. Job Summary:
The consultant researcher will be primarily responsible to support the Horn of Africa secretariat and the implementing partners operating in Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia to prepare manuscripts, policy briefs, communication briefs, and related technical documents including publications on reputable journals, abstract submission to international and local conferences, and case studies to document learnings.
The consultant will work with the CGPP HOA secretariat and partner staff under the technical guidance of the global CGPP team to identify the research topics, and technical contents.
The consultant will focus on the Somalia BMGF polio project, USAID Somalia and Kenya polio and COVID-19 activity and Kenya GHSA activities.
Roles and Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare list of topics for original manuscripts, conference abstracts, and communication briefs/case studies in close coordination with CGPP HOA secretariat.
- Prepare literature reviews based on the identified list of research topics.
- Support data collection and analysis with close support from CGPP HOA M&E manager and CGPP global M&E advisor.
- Support ethical clearance aspects as required.
- Support write-up of methods, results, discussion, and conclusions of identified research topics.
- Identify relevant reputable journals and support the staff to make submissions for publications.
- Follow-up on feedback and communications with journals.
- Support revisions to be made to journal submissions based on feedback from reviewers.
- Support preparation and submission of conference abstracts.
- Support drafting of communication briefs and case studies.
- Provide on the job trainings on manuscript writing to the HOA secretariat and partner staff.
Expected deliverables
- Produce four (4) manuscripts for submission to reputable journals.
- Prepare three (3) policy briefs.
- Prepare three (3) conference abstracts.
- Train 10 staff on manuscript and conference abstract writing.
- Prepare three (3) communication briefs/case studies.
Qualifications:
- Masters degree in a health-related field is required.
- At least five (5) years of professional experience in research and manuscript writing.
- Data analytics software skills.
- Published at least five (5) papers either as a principal or co-author.
- Fluency in written and spoken English is mandatory.
- Excellent analytical skills with the ability to detect and report inconsistencies.
- Excellent writing skills.
- Capacity to work with minimal supervision.
- Must be a team player with good problem-solving skills.
- Ethical conduct in accordance with recognized professional and organizational codes of ethics.
- Ability to work collaboratively.
- Ability to multitask and deliver work to tight deadlines.
- Willingness to travel as needed.

Key Working Relationships:
Internal: CGPP HOA secretariat, Global Chief of Party, Deputy Global Director, MEAL lead, Communication Lead, Global Health Security lead, and Program Manager.
Duration of Contract: March 1, to September 2023.
